TWO DEBUTS, ONE WEEKEND?!?!
The April Fools weekend was initially intended to be an action packed one for Air Doug and the Chase Pistone crew! On March 31st they planned to take on America’s Favorite Bull Ring at Wake County Speedway! This time, the red Ferrari was sidelined. The black and green Barnes Paving Chevrolet was one of the fastest late models all throughout the four hour open practice. Sadly, mother nature would take over and spoil the plans to race for the first time on the freshly repaved Wake County Speedway. The event has been rescheduled to April 14th and we plan on being a part of it!
Although Wake County Speedway was canceled due to rain, the team still intended on making their first start together at the famous South Boston Speedway! Air Doug and Chase Pistone had tested earlier in the week to prepare for the upcoming race, but the track had changed drastically over the course of three days. Practice did not go accordingly to plan and neither did qualifying. The number 88 Ferrari had its worst qualifying attempt of the season in position number 12.
In race one Doug would quickly get shuffled back 3 spots to 15th. After finally finding the bottom grove and with the help of a caution he found himself in 8th place with 20 laps to go. His crew chief and spotter advised him to “play the invert game” and intentionally finish 8th so that he could start on the pole in the second race that would take place later in the night. He did so and finished in the 8th position.
Race number two would see the red Ferrari leading the stout field of late models to the green flag. However, the pole position that was strategically acquired, was lost after just one lap of racing. Doug struggled with the handling of the car throughout all 71 laps of the second feature. He held off multiple charges from different competitors and somehow brought the car home with a 5th place finish.
Although the struggles, the team is excited to apply all of the new information they learned next time they return to South Boston Speedway!
